The design of the main stadium for the 17th Asian games in Incheon, in South Korea, illustrates a new level of sustainable design in stadia in Asia. The stadium will hold 70,000- people for the main event in 2014 and will reduce down to a single sided grandstand for 30,000 afterwards as a People’s Park for the city of Incheon.  The global architecture firm, Populous, won the design of Incheon stadium and is working on the project with local firm Heerim Architects and Planners.

The main stadium is located between Incheon international airport and Seoul and will be the first landmark building people see when travelling to the South Korean capital from the airport. It sits between two major areas of development, established by the Korean Government as part of the Incheon Free Economic Zone to encourage foreign investment; Songdo, the residential, high rise eco friendly residential, and trade district, and Cheongna, the new cultural, entertainment and finance district.

The key to the new stadium’s success will be its operation in legacy mode. The stadium explores the successful marriage of temporary and permanent making certain that only that which is essential will remain after the main event. The stadium design is based on an asymmetrical configuration with the main corporate and management facilities located on the permanent western side, creating a more efficient design, both in terms of construction and operations.

The Eastern side will be a lighter solution, the temporary modular seating structure will disappear after the games, and the stadium reduce down to the single sided grandstand. The building will link into the surrounding parklands; integrate into the landscape, provide an open accessible gathering place for the people of Incheon.

It is a scheme that is opens to the city, inclusive rather than aggressive, but with a façade that will give the stadium a presence, a landmark for Incheon, recognising its value as an iconic stadium for the Asian games.

Seung Moo Dance

Symbolism is important to Korean culture; music and dance an integral part of everyday life. The symbolic meaning of dance in Korean choom means “coming together” However, it was the more traditional Buddhist ritual dance, the Seung Moo Monk dance, which provided the image that reflected perfectly the architectural drama of Incheon stadium –flowing form and space around dynamic movement.

The main stadium roof likewise extends; at one end leading to the main plaza, beckoning people in, introducing them to the stadium; the other end merges with the landscape, creating a singular, fluid movement.incheon04.jpgEvent Mode- 70,000 Seat Asian Games Main Stadiumincheon05.jpgLegacy Mode- 30,000 Seat Regional Stadium + People’s Park incheon06.jpg
